Why Now?
There are several reasons why you should make your long term care decisions. Rates increase with the age of the applicant. Once you make the decision to invest in long term care insurance, you are “locked in” at today’s age allowing you to pay level premiums. The longer you wait the more you will have to pay each year. In addition, premiums are affected by health. The better your health, the lower your premium.
Background
Long-term care used to be associated with just nursing home care for the elderly. Today, it is so much more. Consider this, most health insurance, including disability income insurance, does not cover long term care. The same is true for Medicare or Medicare Supplement insurance. 84% to 68% of care giving employees had to take time off during the day, arrive late/leave early or make personal phone calls while 33% had to formally decrease their working hours. Also, the cost of one year in a nursing home averages $72,000 and round the clock home nursing care already cost more than $164,000 a year in many parts of the country.
With family patterns changing, the emergence of women in the workforce and the rise of the “sandwich generation,” long term care has become an issue for individuals, families and employers.
